Batch Portable Data Collection Terminals

In non-RF mode, a local program running on the hand held terminal prompts users to scan or key in data. Collected data is stored in the hand held terminal for upload to a host through a cradle and communications cable. Batch programs can be “smart” that is they can be written to validate data inputs and perform lookups against an internal database. For most applications, we try to keep the level of complexity for users at or below that of a standard ATM.

A classic batch data collection application is inventory and cycling counting. When collected data does not need to be entered into the host in “real time”, a well written batch application running on batch terminal can be a significant improvement over paper and pencil. Since batch data collection systems tend to be self contained, they generally do not cost too much nor do they involve a heavy integration effort in order to make them work with existing computing systems.
